Domaine Hudelot-Noellat one of the top Burgundy producer trace its origins back to 1962. Founded by Alain Hudelot, he ran the estate for 45 years. In 1978, he married Odile Noëllat (granddaughter of Charles Noëllat), this union brought new vineyard in the Domain. 10 years later, in 1988, they added other vineyard to their holding: Domaine Hudelot was divided, half of it went to Domaine Leroy, Alain and Odile splitted the other half with Domaine Jean-Jacques Confuron. 2007 was the last vintage of Alain Hudelot, he stepped down in 2008 to allow his grandson Charles Van Canneyt to take over, right after he completed his wine course at Dijon University.

Domaine Hudelot-Noëllat is one of the 3 fortunate producers to have both Romanée-Saint-Vivant (0.5ha) and Richebourg (0.33ha). Charles Van Canneyt offers great village wine with a very good ratio quality for the value. The domaine covers 10 hectares, spread over 4 villages and 15 appellations, its makes a wide and very interesting selection. Most of his plots have very old vines, planted in the 1930s’, 50s’.

An extremely fresh and bright nose is comprised mostly by red berry aromas that are in keeping with the equally bright, delicious and well-detailed flavors that conclude in a lightly austere and rustic finale. This refreshing effort should drink well after only a year or so of keeping.

This is also wonderfully fresh though with more deeply pitched and spicier aromas. There is even better mid-palate density to the delicious, vibrant and velvet-textured flavors that display focused power on the compact, serious and impressively long finale. This is a very good Vosne villages that is worth considering.

A more deeply pitched nose freely offers up its aromas of plum, earth and a whiff of the sauvage. The delicious and vibrant, if not especially dense, medium weight flavors possess good punch and focused power on the mildly austere, compact and built-to-age finale. This should age gracefully over a 12 to 15 year window and hold for another decade thereafter.

This too is cool, airy and spicy with its essence of red currant, cherry and crushed fennel aromas. The notably finer texture of the middleweight flavors is immediately evident as there is a lilting but punchy mouthfeel, all wrapped in a dusty, silky and refined yet firm, serious and youthfully austere finish. I very much like the balance and this too should be more than capable of rewarding a decade plus of keeping.

Once again there is a highly attractive freshness to the bright, airy and cool aromas of essence of red cherry, anise, violet and rose petal. Like the Murgers, the middleweight flavors are not especially dense but possess a lilting and silky mouthfeel that is wonderfully appealing before terminating in a dusty, stony, moderately austere and sneaky long finale that doesn't lack for aging potential. This is not only quite good but also quite classy.

A more deeply pitched and spicier, if perhaps slightly less elegant, nose is comprised by notes of exotic tea, sandalwood and an interesting hint of star anise. Here too the medium-bodied flavors possess a really lovely and sophisticated texture yet no lack of power on the intensely mineral-driven, dusty and youthfully austere finale. Excellent quality in an equally age-worthy package.

Allen Meadows (BH) 92-94pts – Sweet spot
Once again the nose is wonderfully fresh and even spicier with its aromas of poached plum and liqueur-like dark pinot fruit that is also tinged with exotic tea wisps. There is noticeably better density to the caressing and seductively textured yet decided powerful flavors that brim with dry extract before concluding in a moderately austere and hugely long finale. This too is quite compact and very much built to repay extended keeping.
