Burgundy En Primeur 【2018 Domaine Mongeard-Mugneret】
HISTORY OF DOMAINE MONGEARD-MUGNURET
The village of Vosne-Romanée lies between Dijon and Beaune in the heart of the Côte de Nuits region, near the prestigious Château du Clos Vougeot and Nuits St Georges.
For more than eight generations, the Mongeard family has been established in Vosne-Romanée since the year 1620, right in the midst of the Côte de Nuits, producing wine with an utmost respect for tradition.
The Domaine Mongeard-Mugneret, renamed since 1945, now operates a large vineyard in the purist of the burgundy tradition. My grand-father was Eugène Mongeard and my grand-mother Edmée Mugneret.
The property accounts today for approximately 30 hectares, spread on 35 different appellationsproducing white Burgundy issued from the Chardonnay grape, but also essentially red wines issued from the Pinot Noir grape in the best climates of the Côte.

THE 2018 WINES:
Vincent Mongeard: the 2018 growing season "was especially hot and dry though other than some spring mildew pressure, it was relatively easy to manage. We had a very fast flowering and as such there were uniform maturities plus the fruit was so clean that it made for rapid picking as there was little to sort.
Echezeau Grand Cru 2018 AM90-92
More moderate wood influence frames the nicely cool and fresh essence of dark cherry, raspberry and a plethora of spice elements. There is fine volume and slightly better density to the suave and velvety larger-scaled flavors that offer better length and balance though a bit less complexity.
Notes: It's from vines in Echézeaux du Dessus
Clos de Vouget Grand Cru 2018 AM89-91
Strong menthol-infused aromas include those of poached plum, cassis, earth and a whisper of game. The mouthcoating rich and velvet-textured flavors possess a highly seductive mid-palate though the warm mocha and bitter cherry pit-inflected finish displays a touch of acid tang that's bright enough to detract, if only mildly, from the sense of balance.
Notes: It is from a 0.63 ha holding in Grand Maupertui and Les Chioures
Echezeau La Grande Complication 2018
Prominent aromas of toasty oak and menthol suffuse the pretty and ultra-floral aromas of spicy purple fruit. The wood shows up on the palate as well of the dense and powerful larger-scaled flavors that possess a refined mouthfeel while delivering fine length on the mildly warm finish. This is fairly oaky at present but the concentration is such that it should be able to absorb most of it.
Notes: It is from selected vines in a 0.36 ha parcel of Les Treux that was planted in 1945; the wine, which is intended to replace the prior cuvée known as Echézeaux Vieilles Vignes, comes in a special 3-bottle case that looks very much like a briefcase with snaps containing a brochure that explains the selection. For readers' edification, in watchmaking a complication is a function that is added to the hour, minute or second hand of a watch. An ultra-complicated watch is one where the movement combines all three complications in one and it is from this usage that the name La Grande Complication derives; made with 100% whole clusters and 100% new wood
Grands-Echezeau Grand Cru 2018 AM90-92
This is aromatically similar to the Clos de Vougeot though, as would be expected, it's spicier. The sleek, intense and muscular medium weight plus flavors that manage to retain pretty good detail and while the finish is not super complex and is decidedly warm finish, it is admirably persistent.
Richebourg Grand Cru 2018 AM90-92
Once again very prominent wood surrounds the spicy and very floral aromas of very ripe black berry fruit, exotic tea and a whiff of mocha. The supple, seductive and refined larger-scaled flavors that exude a refreshing salinity on the warm, mildly sweet and ever-so-slightly dry finish. This of course may better harmonize but today the balance isn't quite as well dialed in as it could be.
Notes: It is from vines adjacent to those of Domaine de la Romanée Conti in Richebourg proper, totaling 0.31 ha; 100% new wood
