Ratings and Tasting Notes:
(RP=92) The 2018 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Chalumaux is also especially open and charming this year, bursting with aromas of citrus oil, fresh peach, white flowers, pastry cream, and blanched almonds. Medium to full-bodied, lively and precise, it's generous and textural, with an enveloping core of fruit underpinned by succulent acids.
Les Chalumaux (often spelled "Les Chalumeaux") is a Premier Cru vineyard within the Puligny-Montrachet appellation in the Côte de Beaune sub-region of Burgundy. The vineyard lies reasonably high up on the Côte d'Or slope, just east of the hamlet of Blagny, in the northwest corner of the appellation.
The 5.8 hectares (14 acres) vineyard includes the 1.6 hectares (4 acres) Sous le Courthil lieu-dit, which sits at the very northwestern section of Les Chalumaux itself.
In terms of location, the site is one of the highest and most northern of Puligny-Montrachet, located on the border of Meursault and Blagny. In fact, Les Chalumaux occupies the same part of the slope as Meursault's Perrieres climate, with which it shares a similar terroir.
While Chalumaux reflects its austere soil, the wines from lower down the slope in this part of Puligny (as in Les Referts and Les Combettes) are often more aligned stylistically with Meursault Premier Cru wines.
