Ratings and Tasting Notes:
(WS=95) Gorgeous, with dense yet silky and refined layers of raspberry, cherry and plum coulis stretching out over notes of shiso leaf, dried anise and lightly singed alder. Still tight through the finish, revealing a buried iron edge. Let this unfurl fully in the cellar. Best from 2018 through 2029.
(WA=94) In the top two to three wines of the vintage and about as good as Grenache gets in 2014, the 2014 Chateauneuf du Pape Le Secret des Sabon (95% Grenache and 5% other permitted varieties) offers gorgeously ripe, medium to full-bodied, pure and complex aromas and flavours of black cherries, liquorice, currant and garrigue. It has beautiful Grenache character, solid mid-palate depth and sweet tannin on the finish. It should be one of the longer-lived wines in the vintage and drink well for a decade.
(AG=92-94) Bright violet. Displays heady aromas of red and dark berry liqueur, spice cake, incense and smoky minerals, accented by a hint of white pepper in the background. Supple, broad and sweet on the palate; juicy acidity lifts and sharpens the concentrated blackberry, boysenberry and floral pastille flavours. An impressively long, supple finish features a bright, spicy quality and slow-building, harmonious tannins.
