Ratings and Tasting Notes:
WA=94-96 The 2012 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Cras comes from 0.68-hectares of vines around 70-years old. It has a refined bouquet that contains the most finesse this year – just everything perfectly in place on the nose. The palate is medium-bodied, very tense with life-affirming minerality. The terroir is succinctly articulated and the finish is long and penetrating. This Les Cras has a structure that is almost severe, yet still compelling on its uncompromising stony finish. This is outstanding – but one for hardcore Chambolle aficionados!
AG=94+ Healthy medium red. Pure, reticent aromas of kirsch, licorice and calcaire minerality; less expressive in the early going than the Veroilles or Fuées. Then hugely concentrated and compellingly sweet in the mouth, but with outstanding sappy energy to the flavours of black raspberry, minerals and peach pit. Offers a near-perfect balance between flesh and mineral energy. Finishes with outstanding tactile persistence and a complicating saline quality, the tannins are perfectly supported by the wine's strong extract.
AM=91-94 Sweet Spot Outstanding! This is perhaps a bit more deeply pitched than it usually is with dark rather than red fruit, with aromas that include black currant, dark cherry and plum. There are an almost palpable sense of minerality on the precise, intense and vibrant middle weight flavours that possess a suave yet firm mouth feel before concluding in a palate coating, saline and moderately austere finish. This should be excellent in time.
