Ratings and Tasting Notes:
(RP=92) Disgorged in June 2018, this bottle of the 2011 Brut Grand Vintage offers up a rich bouquet of brioche, ripe lemons, tangerine, peat, and walnuts that's a touch more oxidative than I would have expected to find it. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, broad, and powerful, with a fine, pinpoint mousse, ripe but tangy acids, excellent depth at the core, and an expansive, nutty finish.
(AG=90) Varnier-Fannière's s 2011 Grand Vintage is a very pretty wine, especially within the context of the year. In the glass, 2011 is a bit understated, and yet all of the elements are impeccably balanced, with none of the awkward notes that have affected so many wines.
From the Winery:
Dosage = 7 g / liter of sugar (Brut) The quintessence of Grand Cru at VARNIER-FANNIERE. 1996, 1999, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2009… Only exceptional years are vintage. Exercise of a style of our know-how, each vintage sublimates and exalts the generosity of an exceptional harvest. Each bottle of our Grand Vintage Champagne has been produced with our oldest plots, whose grapes have maximum aromatic potential. The pale gold color with silvery reflections is highlighted by a beautiful carpet of moss. It is a mature nose. The praline and dry herbs give way to floral notes.
After an attack of remarkable freshness, the mouth offers a beautiful amplitude which increases as the tasting progresses. The finish is long and marked by notes of hazelnuts.
This Grand Vintage 2011 is a fine example of Chardonnay from which we have known how to expect maturity.
It will go wonderfully with a Bresse volaille or a quail fillet with its white mushroom sauce.
