Ratings and Tasting Notes:

JS=95 Impressive depth to the wine from the outset with a gently smoky edge to the ripe blackberries, blueberries and red plums. Some attractive spicy oak here, too. The mid-weight palate has a very composed and linear shape with a long, succulent and regal finish. Great polish and balance here; the structure is superb. Try from 2022.

WA=94 The 2015 Batailley is a blend of 77% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot and 3% Petit Verdot. It has a lively fresh blackberry, red cherry and violet-scented bouquet that might coerce you into thinking it was from Margaux! It is very well defined, though, and gains intensity with time in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, supple in the mouth and certainly more approachable than the Batailleys of old. It feels harmonious and poised, supple and lithe on the finish with a satisfying saline aftertaste. There is something very assured about this Batailley, and it should drink well for many years.

WS=92 A showy mint note leads off, followed by a flash of ganache before giving way to a core of steeped black currant and fig fruit. A strong charcoal edge through the finish gives this texture and length, while a bay leaf note adds freshness. There are lots to like in this old-school version. Best from 2022 through 2033.

AG=91 The 2015 Batailley put in a querulous showing at the blind Southwold tasting, so I asked for another bottle at the property. It has a well-defined bouquet, although I am still seeking more cohesion and terroir expression. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannin, fine acidity and plenty of cedar-infused black fruit. There remains some new oak to be subsumed on the finish. A likeable Batailley, but I must admit I expected more given its performance from the barrel.
